I am traveling to Minneapolis, MN in the spring for a volleyball tournament. I cannot check my clothes in case they lose my baggage because then I would not be able to play. So my question is can i bring a small suitcase, a purse and a laptop in a sleeve as long as i put the laptop in my purse, or is that considered 3 carry-ons?

This mentions no changes to the number of carry-on items allowed, which for most airlines is a single carry-on bag + a personal item. A quick check of several major US airlines including Delta/NWA which I assume you will be flying to MSP confirms that they still permit a personal item in addition to your bag.
So if you can fit your laptop in your purse you should be OK.
