David King Large

Every true horror fan knows the film: Blood Feast. And most know its director: Herschell Gordon Lewis. But few of them are familiar with producer David F. Friedman, Lewis’ partner on Blood Feast and its two follow-ups, Two Thousand Maniacs! and Color Me Blood Red. Although Lewis helmed these seminal movies, Friedman’s input was equally responsible for their success. Given the colorful life he has led and his experiences in the world of motion pictures, Friedman’s story would be right at home up on the silver screen.
David F. Friedman was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 24, 1923. His parents divorced when he was eight years old, and he lived with his father, who was an editor of the Birmingham News but also a partner in carnival in North Alabama. Friedman’s mother was a professional musician and his uncle operated movie houses, where he spent much of his boyhood soaking up films. But a large part of Friedman’s youth was spent traveling the carnival circuit throughout the South. He was on the inside, a member of the show. It was here that he was first bitten by the showbiz bug, giving him a taste for spectacle that would serve him well in the future.
After graduating high school, Friedman went to Cornell University and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Before being drafted, Friedman worked as a projectionist and film booker for Paramount Pictures. After entering the service in World War II, he was assigned communication duties and served with a filmmaking unit of the US Army Signal Corps. It was during this period that Friedman learned rudimentary filmmaking. After leaving the service, he found himself working as a croupier in infamous Phenix City, Alabama, well known in the 1940s and ‘50s as a haven for organized crime and corruption. In 1946, he sold some army surplus searchlights to exploitation film and roadshow pioneer Kroger Babb, which in hindsight was a most fortuitous meeting.
Friedman went to work with Babb, traveling the country showing exploitation films and learning the basics of film distribution and exhibition. He was amazed at the money that could be made this way. This period also tied in to his love of the carnival circuit—making a score, pulling a fast one on the mark and leaving with a pocket full of cash. This was basically how roadshows worked, and Friedman was hooked.
After his partnership with Babb ended, Friedman met the man that would be his most famous associate: Herschell Gordon Lewis. Lewis, a former English professor and advertising executive, was an odd partner for Friedman, the former carny. But together, they formed Mid-Continent Films in Chicago and were soon to make film history.
The first films they made were “nudie-cuties,” an extremely popular exploitation genre usually filmed in nudist camps. Movies such as The Adventures of Lucky Pierre and Goldilocks and the Three Bares were highly profitable for Lewis and Friedman but, as with any trend, the public eventually began to look elsewhere for a new thrill. And so did Friedman and Lewis. Trying to hit upon something that had never before been done, they stumbled upon a novel concept: gore.
Produced for $24,500 in 1963, their first gore film, Blood Feast, went on to gross an estimated $7 million and played somewhere almost nonstop over the next 15 years. Blood Feast was the goriest horror movie filmed at that point in time and the first to show brains and intestines being spilled and limbs being chopped off. It was also the first film in which people died with their eyes open. Its popularity was no doubt boosted by the lurid advertising campaign designed by Friedman. The movie poster, featuring a man holding a cleaver over the bloody body of a young woman, screamed: “Nothing So Appalling in the Annals of Horror! You’ll Recoil and Shudder as You Witness the Slaughter and Mutilation of Nubile Young Girls—in a Weird and Horrendous Ancient Rite! More Grisly Than Ever in Blood Color!” Always the showman, in an attempt to get publicity Friedman even went so far as to request an injunction against Blood Feast to prevent it from being shown. To his surprise, the judge granted the injunction, so he then had to fight to allow his movie to be shown. Of course, the film was roundly panned by the critics, but that did nothing to hurt it. It was an especially huge hit at drive-ins throughout the country.
Lewis and Friedman went back to the well and made two more gore films, Two Thousand Maniacs! and Color Me Blood Red, before ending their partnership over business differences in 1964. Friedman headed west to Los Angeles and began a partnership with veteran exploitation producer Dan Sonney. Friedman’s first film after breaking with Lewis, The Defilers, which he both wrote and produced, was known in the trade as a “roughie,” an exploitation film dealing with sex and violence, and violent sex. The team of Sonney and Friedman eventually produced dozens of soft-core sexploitation films. It wasn’t long before they decided to expand their horizons and become theater owners.
They bought a theater in downtown Los Angeles and named it the Pussycat. This became the flagship of the notorious Pussycat Theater chain. The Adults Only market had grown considerably in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and Friedman and Sonney were on the ground floor. Friedman went on to become the first president of the Adult Film Association of America and was a crusader for First Amendment rights.
Ironically, it was hardcore pornography that led to Friedman’s disenchantment with the movie industry. His motto had always been “sell the sizzle, not the steak.” By showing everything in graphic detail, he felt porn violated all the principles of good showmanship. Friedman produced a few hardcore films, but his heart wasn’t in it and he left the business in the mid-1980s.
In a nice touch of symmetry, Friedman and Lewis were reunited in 2002 to make a sequel to Blood Feast that was financed by Jacky Lee Morgan, a long-time fan. The resulting film, Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat, was bloodier than the original and featured a cameo by John Waters, one of Lewis and Friedman’s filmmaking heirs.
Friedman now lives in Alabama and makes the rounds at horror conventions, telling tales and signing autographs. Always the carny, he still owns and operates carnivals that tour the South. As Friedman says, “There’s no such thing as retirement.” Especially when you’re a living legend.

Is there a chiastic structure that runs through the whole book of Genesis?
It seems that Genesis 19 and Genesis 38 may be a point and point-prime of a chiasm, since both have a woman giving birth to an ancestor of King David as a result of a seduction. There is obvious chiastic structure to Chapter 38 internally, to Genesis 37:2a - the end of 42 with Genesis 38 paralleling Genesis 40, and in the whole Joseph narrative paralleling 38 with 49. Just wondering if there is a larger structure covering all of Genesis. Am I onto something? Or am I forcing a connection that Moses didn`t intend?
Maybe I'm missing something. From Chapter 19, where do you have a Moabite or Ammonite being an ancestor of King David?
MM,
Is it not possible that Moses transcribed the genesis account from different sources, but did very little editorializing of his own? It has always seemed to me that the abrupt style change at the appearance of Abraham represented a transition from legend and myth to eyewitness accounts.

Women's beaded sandals are part of a rather hot trend that began last spring and summer - but this year it appears that these special sandals have become "quite the item" in terms of popularity.
And - rightly so! For the spring and summertime, there may be no better way to combine an earthy look with more than a touch of flair - creating one beautiful and quite stylish look for women.
Visit http://www.SexyCubes.com, the fashion tube website and Enjoy Exclusive Sales and Discounts on fashion dresses, Fashion Videos, clothings and discounts.
For the spring and summer of 2010, here are some of the hottest selling highlights in beaded sandals for women:
Steve Madden Atlass - There are a number of Madden styles that will likely be hits this year, but this style seems to be at least among the hottest sellers for women. It is a "T Strap" flat thong style sandal with a rather wide strap and gorgeous detailed beading with a romantic and very feminine look. These shoes retail for around $80.
Kenneth Cole Reaction "Glam Session" - These women's beaded sandals are also equipped with a bit of an earthy appearance and have a few different looks and colors. They are appropriately named as they do have quite a "glam" look about them and are one of the loveliest flat thong styles around. As a note, there are actually quite a number of different beaded sandals from the Kenneth Cole Reaction lineup this year. The Glam Session sandals are quite affordable, priced retail for around $40.

Bandolino Galena sandals - These are also gorgeous with a basic T-strap design and a larger rounded center on the strap. They can be found in some bold looks such as bronze and black with the beads setting off the look. These sandals have a bit of a higher heel rather than being a flat sandal style. Retail price for these sandals is around $60.
Yellow Box Tracy - This year the Yellow Box company has provided women with some true eye candy in fashion sandals. The Tracy is one of the more eye catching looks having a rounded and beaded center in the center of a V-strap thong. It is available in a few different colors, and has a wedge thong sandal basic style. This sandal retails for around $45.
Earth Avani beaded sandals - These are definitely one of the more sought after sandals, and are one of the more colorful choices in the spring and summer collections this year. This sandal features a slide on style with a triple strap vamp. It has intricate beading, created with a rather Native American style. Not only are these sandals quite attractive, the way they are made will actually strengthen the legs and help to burn more calories when walking. The Avani sandals carry a retail price of around $45.
In actual fact, there are quite a number of additional brands and styles of sandals with beads for 2010, but the above appear to be at least among the hottest selling this year.
Shopping - There are quite a number of online merchants that appear to have gotten the word about women's beaded sandals, since I have found quite a number of places that are carrying them. However, there is a special resource online that provides a good look and comparison shopping for the hottest selling styles for the season, more often than not with trusted resources who provide free shipping.

Wallet Storage Case

One of the best ways is to use CD wallets. These wallets come in many different shapes and sizes and can hold varying capacities depending on your needs. Most wallets are made from polyester or plastic and normally you can store the CD without the case or you can take the inlays out and also store these next to the CDs for indexing of your CDs.
Another cheap way to store your CDs is to use a CD storage box. For a cheap CD storage box it could be made out of cardboard or plastic and again come in varying shapes and sizes depending on your needs. You may store your CDs with or without the cases in this CD storage box depending on the type of box.
Another option to store your CDs cheaply would be to use plastic sleeves with your CDs this will cut down on the space used by cases and allow you to store your CDs safely without the risk of scratching them, this no-frills option is a very cheap solution but also ensures that you can transport your CDs from location to location easily.

Can anyone recommend a CD storage case that carries the CD cases too?
I'm after a CD travel case that actually lets you put the jewel cases in too- I'm sick of having to take mine out of their cases just to put them in a wallet thing for the car.
bit bulky to carry, why not just take the car wallet with you..
or buy a mp3 player and put your fav cd's onto it...
and you could play mp3 through car stereo too...
