A Commitment To Lift Truck Service

Dewitt, NY – August 30, 2010: The Third Quarter 2010 issue of The MHEDA Journal (http://www.TheMhedaJournal.org), the leading online magazine for the forklift, conveyor, storage & handling, and general material handling equipment industries, spotlights material handling industry up-and-comer Chad Hines, service manager at Quality Lift Trucks in Chula Vista, California.

Hines is just 28 years old, but he has already made a mark at the company since starting as a service technician a few years ago. He is the second generation, following the footsteps of his father, company president Dennis Hines, who started the business in 1978. Being part of the family business is very exciting for Chad Hines, who has taken on additional responsibilities outside of the service department. "I spend a great deal of time in communication with our sales, accounting and parts managers to ensure that we're providing the highest possible level of service to our customers," Hines says.

The theme of service goes beyond just repairing customers' equipment, according to Hines. "It's not just fixing trucks. It's about maintaining a high standard of internal and external customer care," he says. "Our customers need us to keep them up and running at all costs. If I can make sure our service department does that, we will earn their loyalty, and that's what it's all about."

Home depot lift truck license?

Is an home depot forklift/reach truck license state certified? Basically can i use it at other jobs?

Nine times out of ten it's not. However, that does not mean that you can't at-least mention it to a potential employer. I've had forklift certifications through other jobs and sought employment at other jobs and it actually came in handy. That's a skill that as long as it can be verified through one company, could help land you the job at another company.

Get to know about US immigration form ‘application for travel document'!

Travel outside United States may be normal for lawful permanent residents (LPR) with some limitations. The Form I-131 is used to apply for a Travel Document, reentry permit, refugee travel document or advance parole. This form cannot be used to request release from immigration custody.

Reentry permit

Reentry permit can be applied by LPR or a conditional resident if you intend to travel abroad for a period up to 2 years using Form I-131. In this case you need not obtain returning resident visa. From the date of issuance the reentry permits are valid for 2 years. If stay abroad is for more than 4 years since the last 5 years of LPR status the validity is reduced to 1 year except if the reason for stay outside US is on government order, as a public treaty member or as US sports representative. New reentry permits are not issued unless validity of prior document is over or returned to USCIS or unless it's proved that it's lost.

In cases where you cannot or do not wish to get your home country's passport, you may also want to get a reentry permit if you plan on traveling outside the United States. You may use it as your main travel document, placing necessary visas and entry and exit stamps in the permit. Many countries throughout the world may allow you to use a reentry permit much like you would use a passport. Specific requirements before you travel need to be made sure of to check with any country you plan to visit.

In case you return to US within a year's time of travel abroad, on your Form I-551 permanent resident card you can reenter US. For naturalization purposes you can file Form N-470 to preserve residence if you intend to stay outside US for a year or more without break to the continuous residence requirement.

Advance parole

After unlawful presence for 180 days or more but less than a year in the US if you leave prior to start of removal proceedings for next three years from date of departure you cannot enter US. If unlawful presence is for more than 1 year the ban is for 10 years from reentry. Using advance parole, although you can return to US. In case of Temporary protected status (TPS) Form I-821, if correctly filed Form I-485 is pending, deferred enforced departure (DED) or asylum status removal is withheld and stay is considered authorized and also allows brief absence from US using advance parole application. If while Form I-485 is pending and still for emergency you travel abroad, using advance parole you can reenter US before it's approved or continue your earlier status after return. But it cannot be used for 2 year foreign residency requirement as a result of J-1 status or while you are in removal proceedings.

Therefore to authorize the temporary parole of a person into the United States an advance parole document is issued using Form I-131. As an authorization for the applicant to travel to the US the travel document is accepted by a travel company in lieu of a visa.  This document is not issued in place of any required passport.

As an extraordinary measure advance parole is used for any compelling emergency and to economically allow an inadmissible alien to US for a temporary period. This cannot be used to bypass any delays of visa issuance or to sidestep the normal visa issuing procedures.

For the following reasons advance parole is not required:

  • If in one of the nonimmigrant categories like H-1, temporary worker, H-4 spouse or child of H-1, L-1 intra-company transferee or L-2 spouse or child of an L-1, K-3 spouse or K-4 child of US citizen, or V-2 spouse or V-3 child of a lawful permanent resident.
  • If application to register permanent residence or adjust status, Form I-485 was filed and pending with USCIS.

Hence valid H, L, K, or V nonimmigrant visa must be presented upon returning to US by such visa holders.

Refugee document of travel

To a person classified as refugee or asylee or who has obtained permanent resident status as a refugee or asylee in the US a refugee travel document is issued after filing Form I-131. Refugee travel document is a must for persons holding refugee or asylee status even if not permanent residents to return after temporary travel abroad to US.

Points to remember about Form I-131

Biometrics must be completed by all applicants for a Refugee Travel Document or a Reentry Permit at an Application Support Center or if applying for a Refugee Travel Document while outside of the U.S. at an overseas USCIS facility. You must also be fingerprinted as part of USCIS biometric services requirements if you are between age 14 through 79 and you are applying for a Refugee Travel Document or Re-entry Permit.

USCIS will notify you in writing of the time and location of your biometrics appointment after you have filed the application Form I-131. Your application maybe denied in case of failure to appear to be fingerprinted or for other biometric services. While filing you can request for the reentry permit to be sent to a US embassy or consulate abroad from where you can pick it up instead of waiting in US to receive it according to your convenience. In extreme emergencies advance parole is allowed on humanitarian basis to assure family unity enabling person to enter US for temporary stay. Advance parole application is denied is applicant leaves or enters US before decision is made on the Form I-131.

The fee for reentry permit or advance parole is $360. For a refugee travel document applicant above 16 years of age fee is $135 and if less than 16 years of age its $105 apart from biometrics fee. Applicants are required to pay the additional $85 biometric fee apart from the filing fee. Else Form I-912 can be used for waiver from paying biometric fee. Advance parole applicants need not pay for biometrics. A single check payable to Department of Homeland security must be made.

Mallorca Travel: The Vintage Train to Soller and Mallorca's North Coast

I woke up to another day of gorgeous sunshine and took a seat on our spacious balcony at the Torrenova Aparthotel complex. The surrounding view of the Mediterranean was astounding and I still could not believe that we had lucked out with this beautifully located water-front hotel after booking it extremely inexpensively over the Internet.

Shortly before 10 am we drove on the coastal highway to Palma and my friend dropped me of at the Estació Intermodal on Plaça d'Espanya. My goal today was to take the historic train ride on the famous Ferrocarril de Sóller to the mountain town of the same name. This railway line was constructed in 1911 and opened in 1912 with the profit from the orange and lemon trade that was flourishing in the bowl-shaped mountain valley of Sóller.

The vintage electric train was already parked in the Estación de Palma and when I arrived there at 10:40 virtually every seat in the train was taken. While this narrow-gauge train route was originally built as the main line of transport between Sóller and Palma early on in the last century, today it is a major tourist attraction and the vast majority of passengers are tourists from all over the world. I walked all the way to the front of the train to take a picture of the "Red Arrow" vintage electric train and then took my seat in the last wagon.

10:50 am was the official departure time, but we did not get going until about 10 minutes later. The train started to slowly and quietly roll away from the station into the streets of Palma where it occupied the median on a major street. Palma's historic apartment houses started to recede as we headed for the suburbs. Then suburban housing developments gave way to flat agricultural lands that were framed in the north by the impressive Tramuntana mountain chain.

I left my seat and passed through the door of the railcar to take up a spot on the outside platform of the last car in order to have a great panoramic view of the countryside we were traveling through. Every once in a while a fellow traveler would come through the door, take some pictures and disappear again to relax in the comfort of the train car. I enjoyed the warm wind and the great views from the end of the train.

We started to get closer to the mountains, and the flat plain gave way to groves of olive trees and stands of fir trees. Now we were heading into the mountains and started to enter one tunnel after another. Altogether this 27 kilometre long railway route has 13 tunnels, and one of them seemed like it was 10 minutes long. After entering this tunnel I could see the light from the tunnel entrance for several minutes until the train took a turn and I was standing in complete darkness. Standing on the platform with the wind grazing my skin and absolutely no vision at all, I enjoyed this ride, sensing the motion of the train and the gentle air flow on my arms. At some point the experience was almost surrealistic, as if we were headed to the centre of the earth, in total darkness.

Once we had crossed the major part of the mountain range the train stopped and several passengers got off to catch some photos of the great panoramic view of the Sóller Valley that opened up below us. Then the train went along the hill slopes southwest of Sóller and within an hour we had arrived at the historic train station in Sóller which is located inside a fortified house dating back to the early 1600. A café and a museum dedicated to the work of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro are also located inside the train station.

My friend was waiting for me on the main square of Sóller; he had taken the road over the mountain pass of the Tramuntana Mountains. We started our drive into the mountain village of Fornalutx, a tiny hamlet that has won many different prizes and recognition for its beauty and conservation efforts. From here we headed westwards to Deià, another gorgeous mountain village with a great view down towards the northern coastline of the island.

Deià is most well-known for being the long-term home of British poet Robert Graves, who lived here from 1929 until he passed away in 1985. A church is scenically located on the highest point of the village and the view from the adjacent cemetery towards the sea and the mountains is simply breathtaking. The scenery in Mallorca continues to amaze me.

Continuing westwards along the coastal road high above the water, we stopped at another one of the island's main attractions: Son Marroig, the coastal estate of Archduke Ludwig Salvator, a member of the Austrian Habsburg family. Ludwig Salvator first arrived on the island in 1866 and became captivated by the island's beauty. He even fell in love with a local woman and learned the local Mallorcan dialect. He authored a highly recognized seven-volume work about the history, archeology, folklore and traditions of Mallorca.

The estate occupies a gorgeous position high above the coastline and can be visited for 3 Euros. Access exists to the main floor's common areas and the impressive formal dining room on the second floor whose balconies open up to provide a phenomenal view over the Mediterranean. The estate is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a white marble rotunda at some distance away from the main mansion. The beauty of Mallorca's north coast becomes evident in Son Marroig.

Our next stop on our country drive was the Port de Valldemossa, a tiny hamlet on the northern coastline that essentially consists of only a couple of restaurants and a handful of houses. To get down to the village we had to drive on a steep narrow road with hair-raising hairpin turns. Back at the top again we went to the inland village of Valldemossa, one of Mallorca's favourite tourist destinations.

Valledemossa is an extremely scenic village with cobble-stoned streets and many bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. The main sights in this town are the Real Cartuja (the Royal Charterhouse of Jesus of Nazareth), a Carthusian monastery dating back to the 14th century. Among the famous former residents of this town are composer Frederic Chopin and the French writer and feminist pioneer George Sand who came here to spend the winter of 1838 to 1839. George Sand wrote "A Winter in Mallorca" here which actually painted a rather unflattering portrait of the locals.

Hollywood stars Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a home nearby and some years ago they founded a cultural centre called "Costa Nord" which is now owned by the town. We sat down at a nice restaurant with an outdoor patio and enjoyed some savoury local bread with olive oil and tomato paste. Sitting in the shade, we watched the locals and the tourists go about their businesses and I also managed to get my souvenir-shopping done in this town.

In the late afternoon we drove back to our home base of Palmanova and relaxed on our balcony, overlooking the Mediterranean before we headed out to explore some of the local restaurants. Palmanova features a large selection of British pubs, Italian, Indian and Thai restaurants. We settled in at "Los Curries", a restaurant with a large second floor patio overlooking the Bay of Palmanova that offers traditional Indian fair. I enjoyed a tasty channa massala while my friend had lamb tikka.

The restaurant owners were very friendly and provided us with local travel advice. At the end of the evening they offered us two glasses of free orange liqueur which provided a nice ending to another busy day of discoveries in Mallorca.

Oahu Lunch and Dinner - North Shore as well as Honolulu?

Going in 2 weeks, staying on the North Shore - Turtle Bay - and need decent lunch/dinner ideas. One or two higher end places and the rest mid-priced or lower, but not real fast food. North Shore suggestions are welcome, but obviously we will be driving around the island so any locations would be helpful.

Anyone heard of Rainbow Drive-In in Honolulu. Saw it on a recent FoodNetwork special and it looked great! Also saw Rachael Ray eat at a Bento place in Waialua (North Shore Country Okazo & Bento) that looked good. Both are in the cheap eats category so I'd love to get opinions and not a bellyache from bad food :-) .

While I'm at it, where can the hubby get the best (or some really good) Poke? What are some good Chinatown Eats? Are Hawaiin Chocolates anything special (Vintage Chocolates or suggest somewhere else)?

I also need dessert, probably the North Shore so we can bring it back to the hotel after a long day.

Whew! That was a lot to ask. Appreciate any help!!

Here are some varied suggestions:

For shrimp trucks - go to Giovanni's. It's literally a converted truck/van on the side of the road. If I remember correctly, it's about 10 minutes southeast of Turtle Bay. If you're going to order it spicy, get the sauce on the side!!

Shave ice - Matsumoto's in Haleiwa.

Haleiwa town - might be closer to you than Waikiki; there is Jameson's by the Sea, Cholo's (mexican), Kua Aina (good burgers), and Breakers (bar).

Local foods - Rainbow Drive-in is good (if the mixed plate is too much for you, get the teri-beef burger). Up the street from Rainbow Drive on Kapahulu Ave (as you head away from Waikiki), on the left side, there is a Hawaiian restaurant called Ono Kine Grinds. Decent servings, decent prices. And there is always Zippy's!

Higher end cuisine - Sarento's at the top of the Ilikai in Waikiki; good food, great view. Alan Wong's, Roy's (both 4 or 5 star restaurants).

Poke - hmmm.....you know, sometimes you can get decent poke at the supermarket deli like Safeway or Foodland. If you are really adventurous, try the spicy raw white crab.

Chinatown - there's a place one or two streets over from Bethel Street (Smith St?) call Little Village. Try the Walnut Shrimp. Legend Seafood on Beretania for the Dim Sum.

Hawaiian Chocolates - if you ever get over to the Big Island, get the Big Island Candies Chocolate Dipped Shortbread Cookies. I think you can order them online.

Hope that helps!!! Hmmmm....I think I'll grab my husband for dinner out!
