Should companies be allowed to use the breast-cancer "pink ribbon" symbol for money-making purposes?
I had a "clothing collection" plastic bag left at my house, in the UK, by a company called "Intersecond Ltd". The blurb on the bag says that it helps to raise money for a breat-cancer project in Lithuania.
On the front of the bag is a pink crossed-ribbon symbol, very much like the pink symbol used by charities connected with cancer.
Can any company (including the one above) use the pink symbol in its advertising literature, or is the symbol protected by law? I think the symbol should not be available freely for use by everybody.
What do you think?
Good answer from Panda (as usual). I had no idea whether the symbol was protected in any way or was copyright
I share your concern though; and my concern extends to those who use the symbol legitimately. I find it unfortunate that support for those with a deadly disease that kills on average 33 women a day in the UK and 112 a day in the US has been turned into a marketing opportunity by big business, with as little as 1% of the cost of specially made pink stuff going to breast cancer charities, the rest into the retailers’ pockets. Check before you buy. In my opinion it's always better to donate directly to a breast cancer charity - then you know where your money's going.
As someone in remission from breast cancer I support the Think Before You Pink and Pink Stinks! campaigns, both started by women with breast cancer as a reaction to big business cashing in on people's concern about the disease in order to make a profit
I believe Think Before You Pink coined the terms 'pinkwashed' and 'pinkwasher':
'Pinkwasher: (pink’-wah-sher) noun. A company that purports to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribboned product, but manufactures products that are linked to the disease.'
