Why do electrical plug arc colors differ?
I have two sets of electrical plugs. Whenever I plug something in them, one of them always discharges an orange arc, and the other one always discharges a blue arc. Orange is always orange and blue is always blue.
Whenever I see arc discharges, it's always one of these colors and I was wondering what is the reason of this difference in arc colors.
My initial guess was, because that blue is lower on color spectrum, maybe grounded plugs produce blue arcs and non-grounded plugs produce orange arcs. But i have no info on that and so it's just my guess.
Maybe should note that I live in Europe and our plugs are different the ones in America...
The blue arc has higher temperature because of higher voltage potential difference between the contacting metals than does the orange arc. The potential difference could be because of grounding as you suspected; but in your case of same wall voltage level it's more likely because of the inductive or capacitive natures (impedance mismatch) of the source and the load forming the contact.
It's true that burning vaporizing of metal or impurity produces colors. However, the colors are not from the quantum energy distances between characteristic valance bands of the atoms of the burned substance. Burning is at molecular, not atomic, level. Burning is also predominantly a one-way energy bands transformation, there are limited excitation then fall-back energy cycles to emit the characteristic colors of the element. Colors are signatures of the temperatures of the heat generated, as modified by excitation absorbing and oxidation discharging of energy by the breaking and further burning of grains of vaporized elements causing changes in parts of a flame's color temperatures.
