Staying Safe When Traveling Abroad

The United States Department of State issues travel warnings in order to recommend that Americans avoid traveling to certain parts of the world. Based on current happenings, it releases travel warnings as guidelines to American citizens. Most governments in other countries also offer safety and security guidelines for their citizens.

Travel alerts are different from travel warnings. Alerts are a way to spread information about events such as terrorist threats and short-term conditions that may endanger the security of Americans traveling abroad. Alerts are released when there is a threat presented can't be prevented, such as coups and terrorism.

Travel warnings are also issued by the State Department. These are different from travel alerts in that they provide information specific to every country in the world. They provide information about the location of the U.S. embassy and consulate, as well as country specific information on unusual immigration practices, entry regulations, information on security, health conditions, and drug laws, among other things.

The State Department advisories that are issued cover entire countries, as opposed to being city-specific. This can be a problem because the advisories provide a general warning. Although there may be instability in one region of a country, that doesn't necessarily mean that everywhere is dangerous. Instead of just reading the headline of the advisory, you can learn much more by reading the entire warning online.

Before you travel, you will also need to research any vaccinations you may need to enter a given country. This isn't hard, but requires time. So, you should find out about and get your vaccinations at least 4 to 6 weeks before you plan on leaving.

The United States Centers of Disease Control website provides a complete list of the vaccinations you need to get before you travel. Include countries you plan on flying through or visiting while on your way to your final destination. Foreign travel insurance may also be useful to you as it covers some amount of medical and material protection while abroad. Not all countries are included in every type of travel insurance, so be sure that the countries you'll be visiting are on the list of covered places.

The vaccinations for yellow fever and malaria are two of the most common that you may need to get. They are both are transmitted through infected mosquitoes, and you will need to get these vaccinations if you are traveling to parts of South America and any part of sub-Saharan Africa. Yellow fever vaccinations last for about 10 years and are administered with a single shot, whereas you have some options for decreasing your odds of contracting malaria. It can be as simple as using anti-bug and mosquito spray, or you can get a shot. Another option is taking anti-malarial pills weeks before your trip. Keep in mind that malaria is curable, but it is better to take the necessary precautions.

With a bit of planning ahead and some research, you can be prepared for any trip. The internet is a useful resource that makes it easy to learn about traveling to any country in the world.
