Hiding extra baggage into your luggage...?

You're only allowed 1 carry-on, one personal item (that includes your purse or laptop), and one checked baggage. Now what happens if you take several purses and your laptop and hide them into either your suitcase or your carry-on bag (and don't exceed the baggage weight limit)? Will they make you take them out and check them at Baggage (and make you pay extra baggage fees)?

I often stuff a smaller purse into my checked luggage (and occasionally into my carry-on) and I've never had to pay extra. I think it's fine, as long as they can see into all bags when they x-ray the bags.
