Staying Safe on Your Trip to Paris
If you're planning a trip to Paris, or a Paris visite, you should feel good knowing that it's one of the safest major metropolitan areas you can find in Europe. However, like any city experience you still should take precautions to stay as safe as possible. This will be especially true if you don't speak French and can easily be spotted as a tourist.
Traveling on the Paris Metro system will be the easiest and best way to get to the famous sights around the city. You can use a Paris Pass to explore the city, getting into more than 60 museums and other attractions without having to wait in line. This is a great way to see all the prominent areas of the city. But as you journey around the large European metropolitan follow these tips to stay safe and avoid danger.
- Pickpocketing is probably the most common crime against tourists. In crowded areas, such as a train, metro stations and other popular tourist areas, stay vigilant. Use purses or bags that have a clasp or zipper and avoid putting wallets in your pocket. Traveler's checks are a great way to protect yourself and never carrying more than $100 cash on your
- Never leave valuable bags unattended in public areas. Not only can they fall victim to being stolen, but unattended bags may be considered a security threat to officials.
- When traveling alone, avoid dangerous areas, especially at night. Overall, the city of Paris is relatively safe, however, during night there are some areas that can be dangerous. Metro stations can become a little more dangerous late at night while other Paris neighborhoods can be unsafe. You should take precautions by keeping a low profile and avoid wearing visible expensive clothing or jewelry.
- If you're a woman, be extra vigilant when walking alone. Stay in well-lit areas and avoid smiling or making prolonged eye contact with men. In France, prolong eye contact can be interpreted as an invitation to make an advancement.
- When walking Paris' streets, be extra careful. When crossing streets and busy intersections, be aware that drivers are aggressive and traffic laws are often overlooked. Even when you have the right of way, cars may disregard traffic signals altogether.
- When driving in Paris, be aware that other drivers will be very aggressive. This can be aggravating and to adding to the frustration, parking is limited while traffic is dense and erratic.
- When taking a taxi, ask questions and make sure you're getting charged correctly. Sometimes taxi drivers will overcharge naive tourists.
Overall, when on your Paris visite just be sure to be extra cautions. Be aware of your settings, but still enjoy your visit. Be sure to use a Paris Pass so you can avoid crowded lines where you can fall victim to pickpockets or other predators.
