Vintage Samsonite Suitcase
Vintage Samsonite Suitcase

Does anyone know how to reline a vintage suitcase?
I have a vintage suitcase-- a samsonite, so fairly well made. I want to take old the old fabric and reline it w/ a new fabric for a craft project I'm working on. Does anyone have a clue how to do this?? Do you use adhesive? If so, what kind is strong enough? Please Help!! Thanks!
(I meant I want to take the old fabric out then reline- LOL!)
Removing the old liner is the first step. Use that to create a pattern for the new material. Are you planning on using a vintage / vintage look to re-line the case. I think that would look so cool. There are spray adhesives for fabric and paste looking adhesive. You will need to look carefully to find one that will bind the fabric to the plastic / vinyl of the suitcase. The trick with these is that you need to spray it on the suitcase, wait a little while to let it get tacky and then lay on the fabric.
Which ever adhesive you use, you will want to spread or spray a very thin coat on the suitcase. Give it a few moments to get tacky, and then smooth on the fabric. Give the adhesive a while to dry. It is OK to reposition the fabric a little in the early stage. Use some kind of a smoothing tool to help eliminate air bubbles. A ruler or other stiff edge will help. If you have a brayer (small rolling pin like tool) run that over the fabric to remove bubbles and wrinkles.
My preference is a spay adhesive like the 3M Super 77 Mulit-purpose spay adhesive. It works on paper, cardboard, fabric and cushion foam to plastic, metal, wood and much more, This stuff sticks to just about anything. is one of the most useful and versatile tools for home decorating, crafting, construction and quick household fixes. It is easy to use, dries quickly and yields professional results for practically any project you can think up. Here are some tips and techniques for making your projects easier and more successful.
1. Use only in a well-ventilated area.
2. Make sure surfaces are free of dirt, grease and moisture.
3. Shake can well before use.
4. Align nozzle arrow with dot on top of can.
5. Hold can upright about 6" to 8" away from surface.
6. Test spray pattern in a protected area away from project surfaces.
7. Spray with a light, uniform coat.
8. Wait 30 seconds before securing the bond.
9. To help prevent clogged nozzles after use, tip can upside down and spray until adhesive does not emit.
A good all-around fabric adhesive is Fabric-Tac. It bonds fabric, wood, leather, lace, suede, tile, felt, pearls & gems (except for those with a silver coating on back) plaster, glass, trims, canvas, ribbons, hats, & much more. This is used just like any regular glue/paste - think Elmer's school glue, just stronger.
